The Scholarship is all About Assessing the Human Side of Reforestation

The Department of Fish, Wildlife and Conservation Ecology and the JTH Forestry Research Center at NMSU are seeking an exceptional candidate for an MS position focused on the social dimensions of post-wildfire reforestation in the Southwestern US.

This is not a purely biology or forestry role. This is an investigation into the crucial human element of conservation.

Here is what the successful student will be addressing:

  • Land Manager Perceptions & Participation: How do the people who manage the land, be they government, private, or tribal entities, view and engage with post-wildfire reforestation projects? Understanding their perspectives is key to effective conservation.
  • Evaluation of Social Outcomes: What are the actual benefits of these reforestation projects for local communities? This involves assessing the social, economic, and cultural impacts of restoration efforts.

In short: Reforestation is about planting trees, but its success hinges on people. This MS project aims to uncover the “why” and “how” behind human engagement in the recovery process.

Why This Position is a Game-Changer

  1. Fully Funded for 2 Years: The position offers full funding through a mix of Research and Teaching Assistantships, providing a substantial stipend and covering educational costs. This allows you to focus entirely on your ground-breaking research.
  2. Interdisciplinary & High-Impact Research: Wildfires are one of the most pressing environmental crises in the Western US. This research is part of a larger effort funded by the NSF Transformation Network, linking your work to a massive collaborative project focused on wildfires and watersheds.
  3. Mentorship from a Leading Social Scientist: You will be mentored by Dr. Kelly Jones, a Professor specializing in the Human Dimensions of Conservation, whose work focuses on measuring the impact of conservation interventions on human wellbeing outcomes.

Who Should Apply?

While the research is in the realm of Conservation Ecology, the focus on “social dimensions” makes it ideal for candidates with:

  • A strong academic background in social science, environmental policy, human geography, environmental economics, or similar fields.
  • Experience or familiarity with forest management or wildfire issues in the United States.
  • Excellent research skills, including data collection (surveys, interviews), qualitative analysis, and quantitative methods.
  • A passion for working with diverse stakeholders—from land managers to local communities—to find sustainable solutions.

Why Choose New Mexico State University (NMSU)?

New Mexico State University is a leading public research university and a Hispanic-serving institution, offering a rich academic environment. Located in the sunny city of Las Cruces, NMSU provides:

  • Diverse Academic Programs: A wide array of undergraduate and graduate programs across multiple colleges.
  • Research Opportunities: Access to cutting-edge research facilities and projects.
  • Vibrant Campus Life: A welcoming community with numerous student organizations and activities.
  • Affordable Living: Las Cruces offers a relatively lower cost of living compared to many other US cities.

  • Accommodation: On-campus or off-campus housing expenses.
  • Monthly Stipend: A regular payment to cover living costs, food, and personal expenses.
  • Books and Supplies: Funding to help with the cost of essential academic materials.
  • Health Insurance: Crucial coverage to ensure your well-being throughout your study period.

This complete package means you can pursue your degree without the usual financial worries associated with international study in the USA.
