Nigerian lady bags two bachelors degrees within 5 years
A brilliant 22-year-old Nigerian lady bags two degrees (Bachelors Degrees), one from the United Kingdom and another from Nigeria, all within just five years. Her name is Melissa Onwuka, and her story is a remarkable tale of resilience, brilliance, and determination.
In this success story, we share how Melissa achieved this rare academic milestone and the powerful lessons behind her journey.
How the Nigerian Lady Bags Two Degrees: Mellissa’s Story
Melissa’s academic journey began in 2020, when she secured admission into Heriot-Watt University, United Kingdom, to study Mechanical Engineering. The program was demanding — filled with rigorous lab sessions, complex fabrication tasks, high-level calculations, and long hours of hands-on engineering work.
But Melissa pushed through.
She even wrote some of her exams from a hospital bed, proving her resilience in the face of overwhelming challenges.
In 2023, she graduated with strong results and a deepened passion for engineering.

How This Nigerian Lady Bags Two Degrees in Just Five Years
Interestingly, Melissa did not wait to finish her UK degree before planning for the future. While still in the UK, she gained admission into Bowen University, Nigeria, to study Computer Science.
She wanted a broader skillset, combining hardware (Mechanical Engineering) and software (Computer Science). So immediately after completing her engineering degree, she returned to Nigeria to begin the second one.
By 2025, Melissa had earned her second bachelor’s degree, graduating with Second Class Upper Division Honours, just like she did in the UK.
At only 22 years old, she officially became a double degree holder in two highly technical fields.
A “2-in-1” Celebration of Excellence
Sharing her achievements on LinkedIn, Melissa called it a “2-in-1 celebration”, explaining that she never got to properly celebrate her first graduation. This second milestone gave her the chance to honour both achievements with joy and gratitude.
She reflected on her seven-year academic journey:
- 24-hour open-book exams
- Working long hours in fabrication labs
- Writing NC code from scratch
- Machining mechanical parts
- Learning programming languages overnight
- Writing exams while hospitalized
Through it all, she said:
“God truly carried me.”
Leadership, Service, and Global Impact
Melissa’s story extends beyond academics. While studying, she served as a Global Ambassador for Heriot-Watt University, representing the institution across continents and even navigating the challenges of COVID-19 evacuation periods.
She didn’t just earn degrees, she built:
- A strong professional network
- Leadership skills
- Academic excellence
- A reputation for resilience
- A foundation for global impact
She also highlighted the role of family support, especially her mother, who encouraged and motivated her at each stage.
What’s Next After the Nigerian Lady Bags Two Degrees?
Melissa graduated with Second Class Upper Honours from both universities, a rare accomplishment for someone her age.
But she sees this as only the beginning.
In her words:
“This is just the start. I’m coming for more degrees, more growth, and more impact.”
Her journey proves that with faith, focus, resilience, and the right support system, young Nigerians can achieve extraordinary results both at home and abroad.
